Hen quotas were virtually freely transferable within Victoria when they were first introduced in 1975. The 1980's have witnessed a series of changes to regulations over quota transfers. Initially these changes were components of a plan to phase out quotas but that is no longer on the policy agenda. Quotas remain but without the advantages of free transferability. It is well established that restrictions on quota transfers in general lead to production inefficiencies. Another undesirable side-effect is that the value of quota and magnitude of quota rent are more difficult to measure when quota transfers are restricted, adding to the difficulties of assessing the effects of the regulations. In the Victorian egg industry these general problems are confounded... |

A series of numerical integrations of the two-layer quasi-geostrophic model were carried out to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of baroclinically unstable waves at supercriticalities of O(1). The results extend and are contrasted with the results of weakly nonlinear theory valid only for small supercriticality. Particular attention is paid to that sector of parameter space in which the transition from regular to aperiodic behavior is observed for weakly nonlinear waves. It is found that aperiodic, chaotic behavior extends to parameter domains of higher dissipation as a consequence of finite amplitude effects as the supercriticality increases. Sensitive dependence on parameters remains a hallmark of the system as intervals of chaotic, periodic and steady... |

My purpose in this presentation is to give an overview or perspective on the financial situation in U.S. agriculture. Since descriptions of the situation are generally available (Easterbrook, J. Lee, Melichar-1985, ERS-USDA, van Blokland), I'll only briefly review the problem and its roots. The major emphasis of my presentation is devoted to two areas: difficulties in addressing current financial problems of the sector, and issues which deserve consideration for the future. |

A pictorial field guide to the 30 species of sandfly most commonly encountered in Pará State is presented, based on the easily recognised external characters of the length of the 5th palpal segment, thoracic infuscation, abdominal colour and head and body size. In most cases this allows identification to the species. In others, especially with females, it gives an indication of the species, which may then be confirmed with data from more detailed taxanomix studies. This type of field guide helps in teaching, rapid sorting of flies prior to dissection and in acquainting visitors with the variety of species present in a given area.A rapid technique for the taxonomic sorting of unmounted, freshly killed female sandflies is required, prior to the dissection of... |

This study provides a preliminary description and diagnosis of the Paraguayan cotton production-distribution system. The general objective of the study is to identify opportunities which will allow the cotton production-distribution system to continue being a productive force contributing to the welfare of the small farmer and to national economic development. A conceptual framework is developed that relates the working of the cotton economy and its market participants to government institutions and macroeconomic forces that have a significant bearing upon its organization and performance. Selected aspects of cotton performance are evaluated in terms of their contribution to agriculture and national development goals. Main recommendations for future... |

In market-oriented economics, agricultural markets and marketing functions become increasingly important as the food system evolves. This paper focuses on how selected dimensions of markets and marketing functions can be studied and evaluated in Third World settings. The specific purpose of this paper is to review basic price and related market analysis techniques which are and can be used in Third World countries. In so doing, the objective is also to focus specifically on identifying food system problems, techniques for improved interpretation of price analysis results, and means of dealing with the all too common problem of data limitations. |

The families Licnodamaeidae and Licnobelbi ee are recharacterized. Licnodamaeidae includes the sole genus Licnodamaeus Grandjean, with the species: undulatus (Paoli), pulcherrimus (Paoli) and costula Grandjean, all from Europe; the gen b Licnocepheus Woolley is removed from the family Licnodamaeidae. Licnobelbidae includes also one single genus: Licnobelba Grandjean, with the species: alestensis Grandjean, caesarea (Berlese) and montana Mihelcic, all from Europe. Licnodamaeus granulatus Balogh & Csiszár) (Argentina), Licneremaeus latiflabellatus Paoli and Licneremaeus tuberculatus Paoli (both from taly) are considered incertae sedis. |

Fries (1821: 11) established Agaricus series Derminus tribus Inocybe, which was later elevated by him to generic rank (Fries, 1863: 346). Originally Fries based his circumscription of Inocybe solely on macroscopical characters; when it was raised to generic status Fries added that the spores of all Inocybe species were seemingly rough (’sporae scabrae videntur omnibus Inocybis communes’). Almost certainly this was not based on original observation, as Fries considered the use of the microscope unnecessary, but the result of an uncritical appraisal of observations by Berkeley (1860). The relevance of Fries’s statement regarding the typification of Inocybe is discussed on p. 29. Although the genus Inocybe is easily recognisable by macroscopical characters,... |
